The Japanese Tea House was a donation to the Gardens from our sister city, Nagaizumi-cho. It had earlier been a cultural feature in Whanganui East but in 2015 it was transported to the Gardens and placed on a peninsula of the lake – an iconic setting.
The Tea House is fully functioning for cultural activities and has been integrated with the rest of the Gardens through a landscaping plan by Kelly Jean Kerr and Clive Higgie, featuring Sasa veitchii (Kuma Bamboo Grass) and Phyllostachys aureosulcata (Yellow Grove Bamboo).
Access to the Tea House was improved in 2017 when a new walkway with easy gradient featuring two viewing platforms was added. The walkway has stunning viewpoints across the lake towards the Tea House and across the road to the wetlands.
