Artwork by Ivan Vostinar
Completed December 2022
The Bason Botanic Gardens Trust commissioned local Whanganui artist, Ivan Vostinar, to design and construct a sculpture and seat on the newly completed Lakeside walkway, which lies to the north of the lake, across the water from Picnic Flat.
About 5 metres tall, this ferro-concrete sculpture, entitled “How Do I Relate With Nature” may, perhaps, suggest a reclining figure contemplating a view across the lake while enjoying the quiet company of the surrounding trees. Some have suggested a seal and others abstract visions of space. It is, as they say, what it is. Have fun reflecting!
A small distance to the east of the figure is a seat, also sculptured by Ivan, offering the public the opportunity to emulate the sculpture and share the view.
The sculpture is constructed using ferro-cement. First a wooden form is built which is then covered with layers of chicken wire. The special formula ferro-cement is applied and smoothed building up the layers till the final form is achieved.
The official opening of the new walkway and the sculpture took place on 29 April 2023. During the ceremony the sculpture was gifted another reflective and ephemeral name “Wahakore Tika”, one which the artist accepted with delight.
Funding for these works came from bequests made to the Bason Botanic Gardens Trust and the Whanganui Public Arts Fund.
